Sectional Ideas – Expeditions

Aim: To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery by preparing for and carrying out an adventurous journey as part of a team.

The Booklet

All of the information below, and expedition dates can be found in our annual booklet, released each Autumn. You can access the booklet by going to http://www.dofebucks.org/booklet. On Thursday 12th November there is our annual Expedition Launch Evening where you can talk to the organisers, find out about requirements and different ways of travelling as well as enrol. Further information can be found in the flyer. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 13th!

Bronze & Silver expedition packages are available through the Open Award Centres. Training takes place throughout the year and expedition events are listed in the following pages. Expedition by foot, cycle or canoe.

Gold expedition packages are available county wide.

2010 GOLD EXPEDITION LAUNCH EVENING: 12TH NOVEMBER 2009

– At The Coach House, Green Park Centre from 7.30pm. Come along and find out about our 2010 expeditions for walkers, cyclists and paddlers both in the UK and overseas.

Basic Training

– Designed to develop the skills and competencies to travel safely and independently and will take place in Buckinghamshire.

Planning Sessions

– Attendance at planning sessions is compulsory.

Practices

– The opportunity to use the skills and knowledge you have acquired through your training. The gold practices will take place in a wild country location.

Assessment

– To complete your assessment expedition you must have completed both Training & Practice. All gold participants must hold a valid first aid certificate. A review and presentation related to the Aim of the Qualifying Venture completes the expedition. Bronze expeditions take place locally. Silver assessed expeditions take place in a remote location. Gold assessed expeditions take place in wild country.

Applications

– Apply as soon as you decide what to do. Places are limited. If insufficient applications are received your deposit will be refunded. You must be enrolled with DofE prior to applying.

Stuck for cash?

If you are finding it difficult to fund your DofE activities, there are funds available: Serco Bursaries – To help with the cost of buying equipment for any part of your Award Robin French Fund – A local fund to help pay for any costs involved in an Award activity. Applications should be made to the County Award Manager and be supported by your Centre Co-ordinator. It is expected that there will be a degree of self-help, and a short report on the use of the funds made afterwards.
